Live Streaming, What You Need to Know

Live Streaming Made simple

Users stream videos from their phones, tablets, and computers. Video content is rapidly growing

from businesses and end users alike. And live streaming allows you to attract visitors by

providing new, exclusive content.

Offering video on a site is a great way to increase traffic, if the videos stream well on different

devices. For live streaming the pressure to get it right, right now is intensified. The conundrum

for many businesses is how to present adaptable, high quality, live streaming video cost effectively.

How?

First, you need to create compelling content. Package your message effectively, with a solid

production environment, clear sound, and good lighting. With live video, rehearsal will help

create a professional end product and a test run for your production plan.

Next, be prepared for the unexpected. Like a stage play, you cannot predict what will go wrong.

Be ready with spare equipment, speaker notes, and a liaison if you’re filming in public.

Third, be aware of your pacing. You want to keep your audience with you, not have them closing

the window halfway through.

Fourth, you need quality editing. While many products are now available to edit video in house,

the tool is not all you need. Prepare editing teams with training in editing techniques, theory

and video production. Remember, you are selling you and your goal is happy, loyal customers.

Fifth, prepare your content for different devices. Live streaming requires that you provide

various streaming profiles to deliver adaptive streaming. Creating adaptive video packages in a

variety of file sizes, resolutions and qualities ensures a good user experience for everyone, no

matter what device is used. Providing adaptive bitrate streaming requires the right tools and

technical understanding. If resources are limited, companies such as Cloudinary provide ready-

made profiles to create all necessary files to stream your content in a variety of speeds and

quality.

And sixth, ensure you have a solid hosting platform. Whether on premise or in the cloud, you

need a reliable, flexible platform to ensure your content is available 24/7 to your users and

visitors. In addition to uptime and redundancy, versions in all supported formats need to be

available. Here we offer Helixware, a multi-format, multi-device streaming

platform to simplify sharing your content.

Creating engaging streaming video is hard enough. Adding the technical burden of preparing

your videos and hosting them can be too much for many businesses. Cloudinary allows you to

provide adaptive streaming without hiring a production department. HelixWare provides a

platform for live streaming that ensures your content is always available.

IBC 2016 Summary!

IBC summary

This year was really different for our team visiting IBC conference and exhibition for several interesting reasons! Here we try to summarize the trends that we saw there as well as our new identity and approach of participation.

What happened @ IBC?

Year after year participating in the exhibition we come to a solid vision about which trend was just a hype and which is really revolutionary for the industry. This year for example we saw a decline in 2nd screen apps that we reviewed few years ago.

OTT & TV Everywhere

Now this has been always and will still be on the rise. The clear trend we saw this year is that everything is for sure going over the cloud, as SAAS. This is the era of managed services, even for video. If you are a broadcaster, content creator, entrepreneur, media professional, etc you don’t need to bother yourself with technical details about an infrastructure to ingest, encode/transcode, manage and deliver your digital media assets in terms of video and audio, you just find the right SAAS provider and you take care of your business.

Another trend is convergence between the different technical layers of the business to provide a turn key solution over the cloud. For example, Wowza, the company behind the streaming engine that powers over 25% of worldwide live streaming is now also availing its engine as a cloud service and moreover launching new products like their own player and mobile encoding SDK.

In another opposite example we saw JW Player, the company developing the worlds most popular player and raised $20M beginning of this year to expand their video platform now besides the player they offer full fledged video solutions including hosting, advertising, branding, recommendations & analytics!

Moreover also, since last year with the entrance of big names like Facebook launching facebook live, twitter trying to push further its Periscope app, etc the business of live streaming is a big cake the everybody is trying hardly to get their own piece of it.

Virtual Reality

This is the boom of 2016! Because it is the application of cutting edge technologies to revolutionize the user experience about how we see and interact with things around us. By putting on an oculus you enter a totally new world around you that you can watch and interact with.

We visited Sony‘s booth and I have to admit that we strongly enjoyed the new upcoming Playstation VR headset launching October (along with furious competition as well!) . The demo they presented shows you a football match where you are watching and also can move around, you can activate and watch a layer of match analysis and also see tweets related to the match flying around you!

Sony

Content Analysis and analytics

If content is still king, then understanding user behavior about it is KingKong! This year was different for our team from both companies Insideout Today (Cairo) and Insideout10 (Rome) since we were at the Fraunhofer institute booth to showcase some of the results of the Media in Context (Mico) project we jointly worked on in the last 3 years along with 5 other partners. A typical use case can be searching video segments within a database where a specific speaker talks about a specific topic (keyword). RiseUp 2015: In Video We Trust

riseup

It was back in September 2006 when I first received this email from Mobinil’s procurement department.

“Dear all, Congratulations the PO has been signed and in it’s way to you, thanks for all whom participated in this project”

We were about to start the amazing journey that brought us here today in the World of MENA Entrepreneurship and Hi-Tech startups greatly represented by the overwhelming crowd of #RiseUp15.

Let’s get back to our entrepreneurship story. Mobinil’s project was as ambitious one; roughly half a million US dollars to bring mobile television to millions of Egyptian mobile subscribers in a context where 3G networks were still few years to come and…Steve Jobs didn’t had yet disrupted the TLC market with the introduction of the first smartphone on Earth (this happen only few months after on June 29, 2007 when the 1st generation of the iPhone was released).

Regardless of the challenges, several weeks after receiving that email, we had successfully created the first mobile video platform for the Egyptian people broadcasting live tv and radio channels using our internally developed video streaming technology. The setup was rock-solid and came from our long lasting experience with large ISPs and Telcos in Europe. Since then our business kept growing in various directions (way too many at that time) and at last in 2009 we’ve made the decision of investing in Egypt for creating an amazing local team and bootstrapped in Nasr City our new branch office. After so many years we’re still here, in this vibrant scene and we’re excited to bring innovative video solutions to Egypt by making it available to SMEs, startups, marketers and content owners.

Our new solution is called HelixWare and is the first Online Video Platform designed for the MENA region to help businesses grow using video for marketing, online training and more.

In a world where video is booming and represents 75% of all broadband traffic we’re doing our very best to shine in the business of video hosting industry (while YouTube – the behemoth giant of this market – keeps the focus on the much larger TV advertising industry). We’ve come a long way to offer an easy plug-n-play video hosting solution that anyone can use for delivering his/her contents to a large audience on all different devices (laptops, smartTVs, tablets and phones).

How is HelixWare different?

Yes, video hosting has been around for a while now and there are plenty of US based multi-million dollar companies like BrightCove, Ooyala and Vimeo just to name it a few doing a great job in hosting videos…so what’s in there for our partners and clients and why shall you ultimately choose us in this over crowded market? The “whys” are important and can be summarized as follow:

  • our technology is state-of-the-art and comes from many years in the making and plenty of large installations around Europe and in the MENA region (handling millions of viewers)
  • our team sits in Nasr City and you’re welcome to come anytime to our office, have a coffe and discuss your next video project with us. We’ve put together an amazing gang of people with clear business vision and top notch marketing skills to help you around the clock with your project
  • we’ve all the modules you need to run a business on videos – this basically means you can secure your videos and than sell them on your site, add a geo-blocking filter to protect the specific world region from viewing it and a comprehensive set of video analytics to see how the videos are performing
  • the platform helps you directly monetize your contents with advertising support
  • the integration with the your web publishing workflow can be extremely effective thanks to the comprehensive HelixWare REST APIs and to our easy-to-use WordPress plugin
  • we’ve build already an application that you can use on your Facebook page to your videos over the World’s famous social network
  • our pricing is tailored for the local market – we want to make it happen and we want to work with you
  • the research and development continues and we’ve an exciting roadmap and great features to come in the next few months thanks to projects like MICO (an EU co-funded RTD project on cross-media analysis)

WordPress Media Library Integration

Transcript:

Hello and welcome to another video of the HelixWare series.

This is my WordPress web site, it’s the last version of WordPress 4.3.1 and I just installed my HelixWare plugin.

After installing my HelixWare plugin, I configure the API keys that I received and I connect my WordPress with HelixWare, in fact I have this nice message here that’s saying that I have more than 700 mbytes of available out of 1 gigabyte, that I have on HelixWare Cloud.

Now what I can do when the HelixWare plugin for WordPress is connected with HelixWare, I can manage my clips from the Media Library and I already have a bunch of video clips that I have ingested to HelixWare.

Now I will click “Add New” and I will add another video directly from here, this is now uploading to HelixWare, that means that it will be published using different protocols (HLS, rtmp), it is going to be compatible with all the devices on the market.

I can create a post directly from here, but I want to show this new feature: the integration with the Media Library. So I click here and this is the new video that I just ingested, “Wild Animals”. That means that now I can create a new post from here and I will call it “Wild Animals”, “Wild Animals are Wild!”.

Then by clicking the “Add Media” button I can actually select the clip directly from here and the shortcode to play the clip will be automatically inserted into my post.

So I can publish it and I can view it.

The player is loaded, the video is playing, I have three bitrates with automatic bitrate adaptation, it’s compatible with HLS streaming for iOS and Android devices, with Flash streaming, and also with RTSP and MPEG-DASH.

See you!
